Working in Australia: healthcare and skilled trades

An occupation shortage, eligibility for a visa route, professional registration and an available job are different things. Check each separately when planning an Australian healthcare or trade career.

Check demand separately from migration eligibility

Jobs and Skills Australia publishes occupation-shortage analysis. The Department of Home Affairs maintains the skilled occupation list used for migration pathways. Use the exact occupation and relevant location when researching demand, then check the visa route independently. Neither list is an offer of work, and inclusion does not establish your personal eligibility.

Healthcare: identify your registration pathway

For regulated healthcare work, identify the relevant Australian registration body and your professional title before applying. International medical graduates can follow different assessment pathways; the Western Australian government's medical-career guidance explains the roles of the Australian Medical Council, Medical Board and Ahpra. Nurses and other health professionals should use the requirements for their own profession rather than assuming the medical pathway applies to them.

Skilled trades: assessment and licensing are separate

Trades Recognition Australia assesses qualifications and employment for specified migration assessment programs. Select the program appropriate to your occupation and circumstances. An assessment is not automatically a licence to perform regulated trade work: TRA's licensing guidance describes additional steps for licensed trades, including state or territory requirements. Ask which licence your intended work requires before committing to a job or relocation.

Requirements can change. Confirm the current rules with the linked authority for your profession and circumstances before paying fees or arranging travel. This is general career preparation, not an individual eligibility assessment.
